WHO, WHAT & WHY?

Card game

I am Brett J. Gilbert, and this is my website. There’s not that much to it right now, and despite my best intentions there hasn’t been for quite some time. At least I’ve discovered the wonders of Flickr which means there are some pictures to look at.

And why 55 cards, and not some other number (such as the more traditional and prosaic 52)? Well, my original reason for registering the URL was to set-up a site devoted not only to card and board game design (a topic that I find geekily fascinating), but also as an step towards my aspiration to manufacture and sell my own card games.

It’s worth noting that a regular shop-bought deck (52 cards) will usually be accompanied by two jokers and one bridge scoring card, making a total of 55. These are usually printed on large sheets in a 5×11 array before being cut up and collated into a deck. The number 55 is therefore (at least to some degree) a function of standard paper and printing press formats. So now you know.

BUT THAT NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED

Well, no, not yet, I admit. I got somewhat distracted by getting a proper job after two-and-half year’s of, well, not having one.

But I did seriously look into what it would cost to get card decks printed professionally, and have developed six complete card games (with rules and everything), plus have ideas for a two or three more, so you never know. It just might happen.

SO WHAT NEXT?

I did start to play with the Wordpress with the plan of starting a proper blog (the world and his wife has one these days). And it worked. For a while. Before I broke it and couldn’t work out how to fix the database. That’s something else that is definitely on the cards, as it were.

WEB DESIGN

Amongst my other interests and skills, this one is the one that made to primetime.

The word 'ambigrams' in ambigrammatic form, just to make the point.

What is ambigram? Visit the site to find out, and see lots of examples of my own designs.

BOARD & CARD GAMES

My family has always been big on boardgames, and between us we’ve amassed quite a collection. To make things worse I recently discovered the wonders of eBay, so the number of card games I own has multipled alarmingly.

For the interested the internet is fine source of info on the topic:

Carcassonne

Carcassonne: A popular German tile-based boardgame.

This is perhaps my (current) all-time favourite game. So-called ‘German’ games are nothing like the likes of the Monopoly and other ‘traditional’ games that you are perhaps familiar with.

In Carcassonne the board is constructed by the players as the game progresses; square cardboard tiles create a map into which players can commit their ‘meeples’ to score points.
